YESTERDAY was a historic day for Guernsey that will be remembered by everybody, the Bailiff said as he spoke after the ceremonial lighting of the Olympic Cauldron.

Islanders filled the Albert Pier to listen to the speeches from Richard Collas, Guernsey Sports Commission chairman Stuart Falla and London 2012 Torch Relay producer Deborah Hale.

Mr Collas said he was delighted that Guernsey had been included in the relay – despite it being a difficult operation.

'I thank the London Olympic Games Organising Committee for bringing the torch to Guernsey and for placing us ahead of Jersey,' he quipped.

'A traditional Guernsey farewell is a la perchoine, suggesting we will meet again. As we say a la perchoine to the Olympic Flame, I do hope some of the young people taking part in the events today may see it back in Guernsey one day. If they do, I am sure they will remember today's celebrations.'
