ALDERNEY Week organisers have hailed this year's Olympic-themed event as a winner - despite attendance being reportedly slightly down on last year.

The seven-day festival takes around nine months to plan and prepare and around 2,000 visitors pour into the island to watch and take part.

New for this year was 15ft lettering with the event's square-shaped Olympic rings logo erected at the Arsenal and a torch relay around the island to kick the week off.

'This year's Alderney Week has been absolutely fabulous,' said team leader Ronnie Cairnduff.

'The number of people attending was very similar to last year, but what has been noticed is that people are spending less. They are being more careful with money.'
