SARK ESTATE MANAGEMENT is set to lay off 70% of its employees over the next four to six weeks, the company has revealed.

Managing director Kevin Delaney, pictured, said the decision to cut the workforce of 170 by 119 followed the end of its investment programme in the island and an abysmal tourist season.

'The real problem is that there are no prospects whatsoever of next summer's tourist season being any better, or the one after that, or the one after that again,' he said, 'For the simple reason that the marketplace for the island's tourist industry is controlled by the feudal establishment through their blockade of visitors' access to what Sark has to offer.'

Of the 70% of employees facing redundancy, only 20% are seasonal workers.
