A TAXI fare hike of 2.96% is not enough for drivers to cover their costs, cabbies have said.

Lambourne Taxis owner Bruce Lambourne said the approved increase, which takes effect from today and equates to an extra 20p for a three-mile journey during normal hours, was a step in the right direction.

But he added that the rise was marginal compared to the soaring costs facing drivers.

'Fuel has gone up 6% in the last year and the cost of living is going up 3%,' he said.

'Costs just keep going up and up but we're not keeping up with inflation. Taxi drivers are having to take a lot on themselves.'
