GUERNSEY and Jersey must put aside petty differences and unite to fend off threats from the wider world, Jersey's assistant chief minister has said.

Senator Philip Bailhache, pictured, was speaking about a closer working relationship between the two islands at the Jersey Guernsey Law Review at St James.

He said, while the islands saw each other as independent, issues like celebrity tax dodging meant the rest of the world viewed both islands as one body – the Channel Islands.

'Our identity is growing with external threats – we're the Channel Islands not Jersey and Guernsey,' he said.

He added external threats were becoming more frequent than they used to be.
