CONSTRUCTION has begun on a new teenage cancer unit in Southampton which will benefit young islanders.

A turf cutting ceremony was held at Southampton General Hospital to mark the start of work to build the Teenage Cancer Trust unit.

The facility will be for young patients from the Channel Islands and the south of England.

Jay Aylmer, chairman of the Teenage Cancer Trust Guernsey committee, and appeal patron John Perkins flew to Southampton for the ceremony alongside other donors and former patients, who are helping with the design of the unit.

Mr Aylmer said it was an 'absolutely incredible day'.
