EDUCATION will look to increase higher education opportunities on-island as the idea of 'red brick and mortar' universities becomes redundant, its minister has said.

The department's new vision document promises to bring recommendations for a new model of higher education funding to the States by 2014.

Deputy director of education Helen Grand, pictured, was able only to confirm that work to combat increasing university fees was being done in collaboration with other islands.

Minister Deputy Robert Sillars said sending just over 800 students off-island to study cost the department £6.5m. a year.

He said the department needed to maximise the opportunities for education on-island – although that did not mean the creation of a Guernsey university.
