CALLS have been made to remove radioactive waste dumped in the sea north of Alderney.

German journalists from public broadcaster SWR sent an unmanned submarine into the Hurd Deep where they found two nuclear waste barrels at a depth of 124 metres – around 400ft – according to reports.

It had been thought that the containers, jettisoned by the British and Belgians decades ago, would have broken up, dissipating any contents.

The journalists, whose programme will be aired on 23 April, believe there will be more intact ones.

Germany's Green Party wants the containers removed.
