POLICE praised members of the public who rushed to David Allison's aid yesterday.

Mr Allison, 59, died after he was hit by a truck while cycling on the Salerie Corner cycle path.

Traffic Sergeant John Tostevin said islanders performed CPR on the cyclist until emergency crews arrived.

'There was a large number of the public at the scene who assisted with first aid. It was not a nice scene but they all did what they could,' he said.

'Yet again members of the public assisted and I would like to thank them for doing that. It was a traumatic accident and I have made sure there is help available for them if they need it.'

The police said its sympathies were with Mr Allison's family and friends.

Although the investigation was in its infancy, Sergeant Tostevin said if anything could be done to improve road safety, he would speak to the relevant States departments.
