EDUCATION is looking to improve the quality of students' education at the Link Centre by turning it into a new special school from September.

The St Peter Port facility, which will be renamed Les Voies School under the plan, currently caters for up 56 pupils and offers short courses, but is not a school.

Two years ago it was heavily criticised in the Mulkerrin report as communicating poorly with mainstream schools and being overstaffed.

Head of the Link Centre Jonathan Furley has been pushing for changes at the site.

'One of the main advantages of the Link Centre becoming a school is that we can offer public exams, such as GCSEs and other formal qualifications, to our students,' he said.
