ALDERNEY'S newest States Member said he hoped to inject 'a little common sense' into the island's government.

Residents went to the polls on Saturday after a by-election was called to find a replacement for a member who had stood down because of health reasons.

Alderney-born Steve Roberts, who runs a removals business, attracted 305 votes out of a total of 741. He beat off stiff competition from engineer Les Stewart, who won 276 votes.

Mr Roberts, pictured, said: 'I'm very honoured and humbled to be elected and I hope I can carry through the wishes of all the people who voted for me. I hope to help create a States that gets on with things that have been promised and gets them done a little more quickly.'
