A GROUP of five GPs contracted to provide 24-hour custody facilities and forensic medical examiners for Guernsey Police and the Guernsey Border Agency are paid more than £800-a-day just as a retainer, it has emerged.

And with added-on costs for call-outs, the GPs are believed to be making around £410,000 a year.

The Home Department confirmed that the £410,000 sum, which had been calculated by the Guernsey Press, was 'broadly correct'.

It includes a £300,000 retainer payment and call-out charges for an average of two calls a day priced at just over £150 each.

'Your estimated total annual fee is broadly correct and is, indeed, made up of the retention element and that of call- outs,' confirmed chief officer Paul Whitfield, pictured.
