TELECOMS companies in Guernsey have been invited to discuss a potentially lucrative deal to provide BT's new sports channels.

BT yesterday said it was willing to hold talks with local service providers over possible wholesale agreements for its new venture, launching in August.

The global telecoms giant also reassured islanders that its BT Sport service would be available, under subscription, through Sky, regardless of any talks.

It follows concerns that the Channel Islands would miss out on the new offering, featuring live Premier League football matches, as BT does not operate locally.

However, a BT spokesman reassured residents that BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2 and ESPN channels would be available via Sky and invited other telecoms companies to talk about becoming involved.
