A CENSUS carried out in Alderney has revealed that the island's population has fallen by 17% since 2001.

The survey, filled out by people resident on the night of 28 April, found the population had dropped from 2,294 in 2001 to 1,903 in 2013.

While the proportion of over-60s had increased by over a third, the number of younger working age people and children has dropped steeply.

Since 2001, the number of people aged between 60 and 69 has increased by 31% - meaning those people now make up a fifth of the island population.
