A LEGAL battle over Guernsey's new fishing licence regime was back in court yesterday for a preliminary hearing.

UK fishing company Interfish Wirons Ltd and Jersey fisherman Steve Channing, pictured, are appealing against conditions imposed on them by the Commerce and Employment Department as part of the new three- to 12-nautical mile limit.

They were both granted licences to fish within the limit but claim that the conditions attached were unreasonable.

At a hearing held yesterday, Advocate Gordon Dawes, representing the company and the fisherman, applied to the court for permission to submit affidavit evidence.

But Crown Advocate Rupert Sewards, for the department, contested the application.
