AN ELECTRICAL substation explosion rounded off a busy weekend for Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service.

The incident at Rue du Hechet, next to Hechet Farm, Castel, happened at about 7pm.

A nearby resident heard the explosion.

'There was an almighty bang and a whoosh,' he said. 'There was a lot of smoke and flames, which were a couple of metres high.'

Firefighters damped down the scene and made the area safe. A nearby stream was dammed to reduce pollution to the waterway.

A service spokeswoman said it was not clear what started the blaze, but it spread to affect an area 30 metres by 20 metres.
