MINUTES after getting off the phone to his holiday-bound friend, Jose Salgado was plotting how best to burgle him.

And after deciding to pose as a tradesman, he broke into his pal's home and stole £10,000 in cash and more than £18,000-worth of jewellry. He also, after being arrested, 'cold bloodedly' tried to pin his crime on a colleague, the Royal Court heard during a sentencing hearing.

Salgado, 34, pictured, was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison after pleading guilty to burgling a property in Bailiff's Cross Road, St Andrew's.

The self-employed builder, of San Riego, Route de la Mare de Carteret, Castel, is a father of five and the Royal Court heard that his partner had been left in severe financial difficulty as a result of the defendant's actions.

During the sentencing hearing, Jurats heard the defendant had been friends with the man who lived at the St Andrew's property. He called the victim, who he knew through the building trade, on 7 March this year to ask his advice about something work-related - it was at this point that he realised his friend was at the airport. After learning that the tenant and his partner were going to America for two weeks, Salgado burgled their home the next day.
