INTRODUCING licensing for tethering animals would be like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut, goat keepers have said.

Peter Girard, president of the Guernsey Goat Society, pictured, said members would be making their own responses to Commerce and Employment's consultation to finalise details for new legislation to protect cattle.

However, he described the new proposals, which could be extended to horses and goats, as a pointless exercise.

'I don't think it's necessary to bring in more bureaucracy and more red tape - I'm sure there are more important things for them to be getting on with,' he said.

'All of the animals tethered that I'm aware of are well looked after.'
