VANDALISM to a memorial plaque dedicated to three Jewish women deported from Guernsey during the Occupation was distasteful and disrespectful, members of the Jewish community have said.

The North Beach plaque, which is a memorial for Marianne Grunfeld, Auguste Spitz and Therese Steiner, who died in Auschwitz-Birkenau, was forcibly ripped from the wall on Wednesday night.

It was recovered and is currently with police, who are investigating the crime.

Stephen Regal, president of the Jersey Jewish Congregation, which also has Guernsey members, did not believe the vandalism was racially motivated but was disappointed that someone could do such a thing.
