LOSING Warry's will be bad for the island, the owner of another bakery has said.

Martin Senner, of Senner's Bakery, said his business will be the only local one left when Warry's closes its doors before the end of September.

'My first reaction is that it is really sad and bad for the island,' he said.

Warry's owner, Sandpiper, announced the closure on Tuesday with 36 jobs placed at risk. It said the business had lost 50% of its sales over the last three years, as islanders turned to cheaper imports rather than locally-made bread and cakes.

Mr Senner said his shop produced gache and it would continue to do so.

'We will make as much as we can but whether we can take over doing their amounts I don't know,' he added.

'Maybe the Guernsey gache will die out a bit.'
