A VAN filled with rotting food and maggots has been disposed of by Environment Health, which used a 1970 condemnation law for the first time.

The vehicle was abandoned on private property and the landowner contacted the Office of Environmental Health and Pollution Regulation seeking help to deal with the perishables.

Deputy chief environmental health officer Tobin Cook said the food appeared to have been rotting for several months and that it was believed that it belonged to an independent vendor at the Vale Earth Fair.

'The rotting food had led to the van being affected by maggots and flies,' he said.
