Condor trimaran could lead to permanent loss of parking

ALMOST 200 spaces at North Beach could be lost permanently under plans being considered, the harbourmaster has said.

The 10-hour spaces were temporarily made off-limits to commuters last July as part of a £13.75m. refurbishment of freight-handling facilities at the port, which created a temporary compound and access road at the eastern end of Town's main car park.

The spaces were due to become parking again at the completion of the project, but now Captain Chad Murray, pictured, has said that although this remains the intention, the port might require the area permanently if Condor introduces its desired 102-metre trimaran.

'That part of the harbour is still allocated to Guernsey Harbours operations and the project is required to hand back that part of the car park no later than February 2015. But as part of an overall consideration we do need to consider the port operations.'

Captain Murray stressed that the plan to use the long-term spaces permanently was in its infancy, and was one of a number of options being considered should Condor decide to operate the £50m. vessel.

'We obviously need to consider it.'
