Messages of condolence and tribute came from all quarters after the 62-year-old died suddenly yesterday morning after suffering a suspected heart attack.

Bailiwick politicians, civil servants and friends of the Scrutiny Committee chairman expressed their shock and sadness at the news.

Mr Arditti, who was due to lay a requete regarding the Alderney airfield before the States next week, was also a keen bell ringer.

Friend Peter Bevis, who is also the steeple keeper and former master bellringer at St Anne's Church, said Mr Arditti's death was unexpected and shocking.

'Paul was a man who threw himself into things,' he said.

'He never did anything half-baked or half-heartedly.

'He was a man who knew what he wanted and would do everything in his power to achieve it.'
