Education will create federation of schools
EDUCATION is to turn all five of the States-run secondary schools – including the Grammar School – into a 'federation of schools'.
As part of its plans to transform secondary education in the island, the new federation – which will not go to the States for approval – will see the schools working in partnership for 'the greater good of all students'.
The far-reaching plans will see:
- schools share the best teachers
- students have access to a wider curriculum
- all pupils have 25 hours of teaching a week
- a new 'advisory board' set up to facilitate local management of schools throughout the island
The department said it felt the best way of achieving the aims of its vision was to 'enhance and develop co-operation' between the five States secondary schools, including the Sixth Form Centre, rather than increased competition.
Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre head teacher Tina Watson yesterday refused to be drawn on whether the move would effectively lead to the demise of the 11-plus.
But she said the Education board, as outlined in its report on transforming secondary education, had signalled its intention to go out to consultation regarding selection.
