Diversions and one-way systems were put in place, but drivers found their journey taking an extra 90 minutes.

Capelles and Route des Coutanchez were some of the worst affected areas during the morning, with vehicles coming to a standstill.

Traffic queued from Baubigny, through Hougues Magues Road and Route des Capelles to Route des Coutanchez.

Lines of vehicles also formed along La Vrangue and around the Grand Bouet.

Police officers were posted all over the island to divert traffic and were helped by civil protection volunteers.
