Teaching recruitment drive is part of 'annual appointment schedule'
AN EDUCATION recruitment drive for 40 new teachers is part of regular staff turnover, the department has said.
It follows criticism from islanders that the move was at odds with the States-wide voluntary severance scheme.
Out of the 22 Education employees taking the package, 17 were teaching staff.
A spokesman for the department said it could make between 70 and 90 teaching appointments a year as a result of normal staff turnover, maternity leaves, sabbaticals, promotions and retirements.
'The current recruitment drive is just part of our usual annual appointment schedule for posts which will be vacant in September,' he said.
'The States-wide voluntary severance programme has enabled us to make savings through reducing posts, but without reducing the ability of departments to deliver services.'
