Landfill bid fails

LANDFILL has been ruled out as a future waste disposal option by the States.

During debate this morning deputies rejected a motion led by Laurie Queripel, pictured, to examine it in detail by 33 votes to four.

There was one abstention and nine members absent.

It means that the island will export any residual waste left over after recycling, but details of where and for how much will only be known after a tender exercise later this year.

When the States broke for lunch Deputy Queripel had opened debate on another amendment to Public Services' waste strategy, this one designed to soften the recycling targets to be a direction of travel instead and make sure costs are considered.
