American school's 5ft model boat crosses Atlantic

EPIC storms and gigantic waves did not stop a 5ft model boat made by American students completing a transatlantic voyage and arriving in Guernsey waters.

Launched by students from New Jersey in December 2012, the Crimson Tide was recovered by local boater Paris Broe-Bougourd, 27, pictured, after it completed a journey of more than 3,000 miles.

'I was about a mile south of Herm when my friend, Luke Bentley, spotted it in the water. He thought it was debris. I feel really good for finding it, it's something different – like a revolutionised message in a bottle.'

The boat came with information about the school which launched the craft, was covered in the names of the students involved, a picture of them, and details of its voyage.

A GPS attached to allow the students to track its progress remained intact and working, and has neatly plotted its path across the Atlantic.

Geography teacher Lisa Swanson, speaking from Morris Town-Beard High School in New Jersey, was thrilled and overwhelmed to hear the little vessel had made it.
