Education's annual report reveals GCSE disappointment
PRESSURE will remain on schools to improve their GCSE results, after the Education Department revealed in its annual report that it was disappointed with last summer's results.
The report highlighted that 59% of pupils had received the benchmark of five or more A*-C grades, including English and maths, last summer – a 9% rise compared with 2011.
Minister Robert Sillars, pictured, said the department's main priority was still to improve standards at all schools.
'We are delighted at the continued increase in attainment and progress at primary level and although our schools achieved the second highest ever percentage of students achieving five or more GCSEs, including English and maths at grade C or above, we were disappointed that the results were below what we expected,' he said.
'We will be keeping the pressure on schools and the department to ensure these results improve in 2014.'
