Guernsey Police is appealing for witnesses to the incident after two horses were spotted being ridden across the first green, which is near the road leading to Chouet, at about 10.30am.

Head greenkeeper Marcus Hamon said the damage was made worse by how soft the ground was after recent heavy rain.

It includes hoof prints across the first green, the first fairway and the sixth fairway.

'The right-hand side of the sixth fairway – the ruts are quite bad,' he said.

He said horses were often seen around the course, and that was not a problem if they kept off the more manicured parts.

He added that it was quite unusual to have a horse going across one of the greens.
