She has been chosen to replace Jo Riches, who announced her resignation last September.

Mrs Clancy, pictured, who turned 53 last month, has more than 20 years' experience in teaching and is currently head of Berkhamsted Girls, a position she has held for nearly eight years.

She said she has fond memories of Guernsey after visiting twice before in 1981/1982 to play netball at Easter.

'We stayed an extra day and hired bikes,' she said.

In a letter to parents and pupils of Ladies' College, she gave details of her background in teaching and her own education, saying she had wanted to be a PE teacher since she was 11.

Although born in Lincolnshire, most of her schooling was completed at Thornhill and Bede Schools in Sunderland.
