Sea water crashed through opposite La Grande Mare Hotel and began reclaiming the car park on the opposite side of the wall, forming a 40ft wide crater.

Civil Protection volunteers have closed the section of coast road and cordoned off the area.

Temporary repairs are expected to start today, before the road can be reopened.

Onlookers were stunned by the damage, which they described as much more severe than the previous breach at Perelle.
