Park playground dream to come true
THE long-awaited development at Saumarez Park playground will finally get under way.
From Monday, the facility will be closed in preparation for work to be carried out over the coming months as phase one of the redevelopment, centred around a bespoke 95ft pirate ship, begins.
Friends of Saumarez Park chairman Zef Eisenberg said there was a lot of work to be done, but the team could not wait to get started.
'It is going to be all hands on deck taking the old equipment down and we are going to look at the drainage, because there were some issues with the recent heavy weather.'
Local company NorthGates is providing its services free of charge for the project and director Jason Powers said it was a community-led project, one which his family were particularly excited about.
'When I showed the kids the pictures we came down here and had a look at where it is all going to be. The goal is to have it ready for the beginning of the summer holidays. We need to find out the ground condition. The last thing people will see is the pirate ship.'
That structure will be assembled on site, said Mr Powers, who added that all the fundraising was now seeing dreams turned into reality.
