Deferral of island-wide voting does not mean it's the end
SUPPORTERS of island-wide voting insist that the issue is still very much alive despite debate on proposals to introduce it being deferred to the summer.
After an afternoon of debate on Thursday, 35 politicians yesterday voted in favour of a late-in-the-day sursis to put a halt to discussions until July. Just nine were against.
The delaying motion was actually tabled by Deputy Lyndon Trott, a signatory of the island-wide voting requete.
Deputy Mary Lowe, another signatory, seconded it.
The reason for this, they said, was to wait for the States Review Committee's first report into the machinery of government.
The Policy Council, the States Review Committee and the States Assembly and Constitution Commission had warned that the motion was premature because of the review committee's report.
But those behind it pushed forward regardless.
Leader Mike Hadley said it was an issue that many people had wanted to bring to the Assembly and that is why it was pursued.
