Prostate cancer diagnoses double

HIGHER rates of prostate cancer show campaigns to raise awareness are working, Guernsey's consultant urologist has said.

There were 53 cases of prostate cancer diagnosed in 2012, more than double the 2011 figure (25).

Medical Specialist Group urologist Owen Cole, pictured, who is also a Male Uprising Guernsey council member, said campaigns had helped encourage men to visit their GP.

He said that getting men to see their doctor meant that other areas of their health would also be checked.

'This is proof and there is a huge impact – it is amazing,' he said.

'While there is an increase, the good thing is men will be getting their blood pressure checked, asked if they smoke and other areas which might have a knock-on effect. It is unquantifiable, but it is important.'
