Day care move to PEH criticised

HANDICAPPED and elderly patients are bearing the brunt of healthcare cutbacks, a St Luke's day care centre user has said.

Margaret Le Page, 82, had been using the St Luke's daycare centre for the last two years, with her husband Percy, 85, and until five weeks ago it was based at the King Edward VII hospital.

This was closed and the service transferred to Casquets ward at the PEH, where day care residents have to mix with those with dementia, she said.

The ward is wholly unsuited to their needs and has ruined what used to be an enjoyable day out, Mrs Le Page claims.

'The main point is it is a stupid idea that day visit attendees should mix with Casquets patients who have different needs to us,' she said.

Health minister Mark Dorey met with concerned residents and afterwards said the size of the King Edward space had been 'difficult to match', but that the Casquets 'is a modern environment' which also had a garden.
