Bogus emailers use Commerce minister's name

FINANCE firms have been alerted over an email containing a virus which could have infected their computer systems.

The Guernsey Border Agency was alerted to the potential danger by Commerce and Employment minister Kevin Stewart, who was targeted by online impersonators.

Deputy Stewart stressed that he had not been hacked, but a number of unknown people had set up a Gmail account using his name and sent an email to a finance company claiming to be him.

The bogus email asked firms to download an important document, which turned out to be a virus.

He had no clue about who would have set up the fake address otherwise 'I would nick em', he said.

'I was forwarded it by a finance company. It purports to be from Gifa and basically it says there is an "important message" to download and when you do it is a virus.

'I have not been hacked, someone has gone to the trouble of setting up a Gmail account. Clearly these people are serious and have done quite a professional job on the email.'
