Culture and Leisure minister Mike O'Hara was joined by Tony Browning from the Sea Cadets to fly the flag on the Weighbridge roundabout mast.It carries the slogan Remember and Celebrate, along with The Day of Liberation in Guernsey-French.

'I am immensely proud seeing it up there,' Deputy O'Hara said. 'I think it is very important and something that will be used for future Liberation Days. Everyone will be able to see it and we hope that it will help to remind people of the significance of Liberation celebrations.'

Deputy O'Hara said the dates for the new flag to fly – until Friday 16 May – were a significant part of island cultural history. 'The war officially ended on 8 May 1945, then on 9 May the German garrison in Guernsey surrendered on HMS Bulldog and the German garrison in Jersey surrendered on HMS Beagle,' he said.

'This was followed on 10 May by the liberation of Sark, on 12 May by the liberation of Herm and finally, on 16 May, the liberation of Alderney, which fully ended German occupation of the Channel Islands.'

The logo on the flag was created by The Event Company, organiser of Liberation Day celebrations. It has been used in previous years on items such as leaflets and posters.
