Sweet-toothed thieves target ice cream vans

AN ICE-CREAM kiosk owner has lost hundreds of pounds after two break-ins less than a week apart.

Michael Hamon, 65, was shocked when he discovered someone had broken the padlocks off the door of his Cobo mobile kiosk and run off with around £120 of chocolates and flakes.

And just four days later the same thing happened again at his business at Ladies' Bay.

'It is demoralising,' he said.

'I start very early in the morning and work seven days a week. People don't realise how much ice-cream machines cost.'

The kiosk at Cobo – which stands close to the Les Carterets Hotel re-development – was broken into at some point between the business closing at 5.30pm on Monday 19 May and it reopening the next morning.

'They ripped the padlock off and got in through the door,' he said.

'I have never had any problems here before, but in the past it has been closer to the road. Now it is a bit further back.'

No money is kept on site overnight. Instead the thieves ran off with chocolates, soft drinks and small flakes – which are especially made for 99 ice-creams. They also pushed down the leaver of the soft ice-cream maker, resulting in Mr Hamon finding streams of melted ice-cream dribbling across the floor.
