Pupils from both schools which are to shut had the first of several visits earlier this week.

St Sampson's Infant School PTA chairman James Seymour said parents had been eager to know everything they could about practical information about Vale Primary, and the mood among them was one of sombre resignation.

'There are five weeks left of St Sampson's and that's it. Everyone wants as much information as possible, and they want to look around the Vale, although that cannot happen until the building work there has finished.

'The head teachers are putting out joint newsletters and as much information as possible is being forwarded on. The mood is that it is going to happen.'

Jade Le Page, 31, has twins at the school and said the transition day had proved successful, although she still had concerns.

'They came back and told me they already had some new friends. I'm still unhappy about putting them on to the bus when they're just six years old. I'll have to be wondering if they are going to get off at the right stop.
