The Guernsey Fire & Rescue Service was called to the Guernsey Equestrian Centre, Grandes Capelles, St Sampson's, shortly before 4pm where they found Flashy, an eight-year-old coloured Irish sport horse, stuck in a 6ft deep trench.

'I really thought he was going to die and for him to come out with only a few grazes is a miracle,' said owner, Kelly King, 22, pictured.

'He's a really hot-headed horse as it is and we had to stay with him and do our best to calm him down.'

Miss King's partner, bus driver Justin Ogier, 25, had met her at the centre, as they do most days, to put their horses inside for the night. Mr Ogier owns another gelding, Yogi.

'Yogi only tends to come when I call him if I am holding Flashy,' said Mr Ogier.

'Yogi had broken through an electric fence, though both horses were still in the secure area, and was running towards me with part of the fence tangled around his legs.

'I had to let go of Flashy and hurdle this big length of wire that was hurtling towards me. Flashy panicked, ran off and fell in the ditch.'
