'Cover supervisors' will stand in for teachers

TEACHER absences in secondary schools are to be covered by new in-house supply staff, Education has confirmed.

In a break from the tradition of using supply teachers when staff are off work, director of education Alan Brown said schools would now be provided with a dedicated resource available on demand to stand in when needed.

'They will be called cover supervisors and will be people with the necessary experience to do the job,' he said.

'What we want is people who know the system within the school itself and know how to work with young people.

'This will not be an additional cost for us, as we already pay for supply teachers.'

The idea is being trialled at island secondary schools, and, if successful, would be expanded to cover the larger primary schools, Mr Brown added.
