'Tough' standards will hold teachers to account

TEACHERS will be 'held to account' under a new set of professional standards announced by the Education Department.

Over the coming academic year these will be rolled out across schools and are designed to ensure all teachers are marked against the same, 'tough set' of standards so strength and weaknesses can be identified, focused on and, where needed, improved.

Director of Education Alan Brown said the idea was to make sure all teachers operate at the same level.

'It is to hold them to account but also to ensure the professionalism of the workforce and the positive contribution of the service. It is for teachers to learn to and from each other. The standards were set by teachers, for teachers and the implementation will be monitored. It is about the values we feel are important and we want to work together as a workforce. The criteria will be made public, there is no secret there.'
