Businesswoman and former GBG magazine MD Sue Markham, 50, was thanked personally in an online confession and apology by the 35-year-old, pictured, who has now received a lifetime ban from the sport for match-fixing.

Posting on Facebook Ms Markham, who now lives in New Zealand, said she was proud of Mr Vincent's courage and respect for life and his loved ones.

'You're a brave and humble man Lou Vincent,' she said. 'This has been going on since we met and we have stayed silent out of respect to the ongoing investigation and to the game of cricket. Lou has suffered a great deal and soon hopefully we can start the life I feel we both deserve.

'Been hard not being able to reach out to friends but I'm proud of Lou.'

The 35-year-old cricketer has played 23 Tests and 102 one-day internationals for New Zealand between 2001-2007, and also appeared in county cricket in England for Sussex, Lancashire, Northamptonshire and Worcestershire.

He has pleaded guilty to 18 breaches of cricketing regulations, four of which related to a Twenty20 match between Lancashire and Durham in June 2008.
