Shrine to return to Smith Street
A SHRINE to islanders who died in the First World War will be restored to its former glory thanks to the efforts of one man.
St Peter Port douzenier Keith Pike, pictured, is now £900 short of his £3,000 target and said the memorial, which started its life at the bottom of Smith Street, would hopefully be back in place within months.
'If everything goes to plan it will be unveiled on 23 October.
'There are 193 names on it and I have 100% support from the public. I think it will be good for it to be back in the original location because there is nothing there.
'I am hoping to produce a booklet detailing more of the history of those on the plaque, and I have 37 names so far.'
Made of zinc and walnut the plaque remained in place until 1955 when it was removed because of its poor condition. As part of a Millennium project a replica was made by Le Riches and currently hangs at the Admiral Park Waitrose.
Concerts, to be held over the next two Sundays, will see more donations for the cause.
