Dig discoveries put settlers before 50BC

AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL dig at a secret St Saviour's site has uncovered finds dating back to the Iron Age.

Those behind the dig, which started on Monday, had kept the site's location under wraps due to fears that metal detectorists would visit without permission and disturb the area.

But so far there have been no uninvited visitors and States archaeologist Dr Phil de Jersey said a lot of flint had been found, as well as hundreds of pieces of Roman pottery.

It is believed the site was inhabited from about 50BC, but Dr de Jersey said the high number of flint finds implied that there might have been even earlier settlement nearby.
