Owners alerted over obese pets problem

PET owners who potentially 'love their animal too much' are being warned about the dangers of poor diet and lack of exercise.

It comes after a third of animals in Jersey were revealed to be at risk of dying early because of their weight.

It has become a major problem in cats.

National figures from the PDSA also showed the south-west had the highest number of obese dogs at 39%.

While local vets had not seen a significant rise, they advised owners to be aware.

States veterinary officer David Chamberlain also warned islanders that they had a duty of care and disregard of it could be regarded as a criminal offence.
