'Nuclear option' is to wind up commons council
SCRAPPING the Vale Commons Council is Culture and Leisure's 'nuclear option' if an agreement cannot be reached over the future of golf at L'Ancresse, its minister has said.
Mike O'Hara said it was a last resort he hoped would never come about, but said it had become increasingly frustrating that the council was 'moving the goalposts' over what it considered a reasonable offer for the clubs to continue using the course beyond 2016.
He confirmed the L'Ancresse and Royal Guernsey golf clubs had made an offer of £50,000 a year – above commercial rates – for the use of the course.
'The stumbling block has been the Vale Commons Council every time,' he said.
'The golf clubs would pay the £50,000 right now, before the end of the lease, so they could have all that extra money in their coffers.'
