Traditional bonfire night is enjoyed by hundreds
FIREWORKS lit up the sky yesterday evening as hundreds of people celebrated bonfire night on the traditional day.
Organised events were held at places including the 2nd Guernsey Scouts' Wayfarers' Centre at La Rue de Haut, Vale, Northerners Athletic Club, and the Guernsey Rugby Club, while many private parties took place on a night which offered ideal weather conditions.
The 2nd Guernsey Group Scout leader Juliet Carre said they had been putting their event on for more than 20 years and, in previous years, some 300 people had attended when the weather was good.
Adults were charged £2 for admission and £1 for children.
'We don't make a great deal of money from it and it's a bit more about PR for us but we enjoy doing it,' she said. 'I think organised events represent better value for money and we always have a good time. We always put on a good display and the people who do it are very keen.'
Nurse, Gemma Girard, her husband Adrian, and daughter, Lyla, 5, were among a large crowd at La Rue de Haut. 'We saw about it on the internet,' said Mrs Girard.
'We wanted to come to one that started early because it's a school night and that had a bonfire.
'I like the atmosphere on a cold winter's night and the bean jar too.'
