Poor attendance at La Mare raises GCSE fears

POOR attendance will hit GCSE results at La Mare, Education has warned, confirming that a quarter of Year 11 pupils are failing to turn up at least 85% of the time.

The figure means those pupils are missing more than half a day of school a week – adding up to a month during the course of the school year.

'At La Mare de Carteret High school whole school attendance figures have steadily increased for the last three years, although there is wide variance between individual year groups,' a department spokesman said.

'Current Year 11 attendance is a concern and has been low since Year 7, averaging below 90% attendance each year.

'As national research shows, there is a correlation between attendance and school results and, as the head teacher stated in the summer to The Guernsey Press, it is expected results will be lower than the current year and this primarily is to do with poor attendance.'

Whole school attendance at the school has increased over the last three years, figures from the department show, hitting 91.1% last year – 1.7% below the Bailiwick average.

The UK average is 94.1%.
